DRUMMOYNE resident Rebecca Hart knows all too well the devastating affects cancer can have on loved ones.
Last April, 33-yearold Rebecca lost her mother, Corinne, to an aggressive form of bowel cancer. Undergoing treatment for two and a half years, Corinne withstood several major surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
“It was heartbreaking, but she put on a brave face the entire time,” Ms Hart said.
“I’ll always admire her zest for life – the year before she passed, mum gave an opening speech and cut the ribbon to commence the Relay for Life event in our hometown of Wagga Wagga. Her dedication right to the very
end is my inspiration”
Rebecca will be participating in this year’s The March Charge in memory of her mother and for all those who have lost or will lose loved ones to cancer.
She’s set herself a target of 50kms to run throughout March and hopes to raise in excess of $1,500 which will go towards Cancer Council funding for research, prevention, and advocacy and support services.
“Anything we can do to eradicate cancer should be a priority – that’s why I chose to become a Charger,” she said.
“I may not be the strongest runner but I’m looking forward to the challenge. The March Charge is the perfect fundraiser for someone with a busy lifestyle like me as I’m able to achieve my goal throughout the month whilst still
keeping up with my current gym classes and netball involvements.”
Ms Hart is urging others to stand up to cancer and participate in The March Charge this year.
“If, like me, you’ve never taken part in a charity sporting event before, my advice would be to set yourself an achievable goal. Take small steps to build up confidence, strength and stamina such as running and walking alternately, with a view to taking it one step further each time,” she said.
“Also, make sure you have headphones and a great motivational playlist.”
Individuals and teams can set up a walking or running target depending on fitness levels, and will receive information and support on how to fundraise and how to reach their goals after signing up to The March Charge.
