Decisive By-election This Saturday
Voters in North Shore electorate will go to the polls this Saturday to elect a new State MP to replace Jillian Skinner who resigned because she was demoted by new Premier Gladys Berejiklian.
Eight candidates including three Independents will contest the election and all turned up at the first of the two Public Forums promoted by The Weekly Times at the request of locals because the other local media were not interested.
Many believe this by-election is a test of premier Berejiklian’s credibility because of her refusal to listen to the electorate over forced council amalgamations.
All eight candidates attended the first TWT Community Forum at Mosman RS Club which was packed by a capacity standing room only enthusiastic crowd.
Candidates were invited to speak in the order they appear on the ballot paper and then answer questions from members of the audience.
They are left to right Independent Harry Fine, Independent Councillor Carolyn Corrigan, Independent Ian Mutton, Liberal Party’s Felicity Wilson, Voluntary Euthanasia Party’s Brian Owles, The Greens Justin Alick, Animal Justice Party’s Ila Leesing and Christian Democratic Party’s Silvana Nile.
Liberal candidate Felicity Wilson, pictured top left, was booed by the large crowd at last Tuesday’s Forum at Mosman RS Club when she said that council amalgamations was not an issue.
Then she did not endear herself further to the audience when she said she had to leave early “to have drinks with the chamber of commerce”.
And she did not appear at the following night’s Forum at North Sydney Bears Club.
Neither did Ila Leesing of the Animal Justice Party but the other six candidates fronted an equally enthusiatic and interested crowd on Wednesday at Norths Bears Club. Voting is 8am to 6pm t his Saturday.
