Anthony Roberts campaign for his seat of Lane Cove at the March 28 State election was launched last Wednesday night by Deputy Premier Troy Grant at the Lane Cove Club.

Former Prime Minister John Howard was expected to attend to support his former personal electorate assistant but was a late apology being rushed to hospital for emergency treatment.

Troy Grant in addition to his position as Deputy Premier and Leader of the National Party in the Coalition Government is also Minister for Trade and Investment, Minister for Regional Infrastructure and Services, Minister for Tourism and Major Events, Minister for Hospitality, Minister for Gaming and Racing and Minister for The Arts. Perhaps he could add Minister for Applied Practical Jokes.

In his endorsement speech to the gathered supporters he told of his admiration and friendship with Anthony Roberts and how impressed he was with him when Minister Roberts first visited his Dubbo electorate and visited the famous Dubbo Zoo where they have elephants, giraffes and other well known species and spent considerable time in the Zoo shop.

Some time later he was called to reception in State Parliament House to collect two large parcels from Dubbo Zoo which were causing consternation and concern.

They turned out to be two large model giraffes to adorn his parliamentary office which have become favourites with visiting schoolchildren and others.

However, he said the sting was in the tail when unpacking the giraffes he found an invoice for almost $2,000 for his “gifts”! So at least he did not have to add them to his pecuniary interest declaration gift list. TWT on-the-spot PHOTO
