Concord remembers the Centaur

Representatives from the military and police joined ex-servicemen and women (pictured) last Friday in the 113th AGH Memorial Chapel at Concord Hospital to commemorate the sinking of the Hospital Ship Centaur. The Centaur was attacked and sunk by a Japanese submarine off the coast of Queensland on May 14, 1943.

Of the 332 medical personnel and civilian crew aboard, 268 died including 63 of the 65 army personnel. Regarded as a war crime, the Centaur was sunk by a Japanese submarine – the 1-177 – and her wreck of Centaur was found in 2009.
