ANZAC DAY commemorations have concentrated largely this year on the centenary of World War 1 but equally important is World War 2 which in reality was closer to home than the European sphere of WW1. We report this week on WW2 commemorations at North Ryde and Epping.
Jan and Greg Doherty – then and now
JAN and GREG DOHERTY of Beecroft celebrate their Diamond Wedding Anniversary on Thursday August 23 and will celebrate with their three children, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Both have had extremely full and busy lives. Jan from Clovelly did her nursing training at St Vincent’s and Greg from Lane Cove studied at Bathurst Teachers College.
After teaching at Wee Jasper for four years Greg and Jan Doherty moved to Beecroft in 1963. Greg was a Principal for many years and was a champion bowler at West Epping and Bush Farm Bowling Clubs.
Jan has been active in the community especially with the Country Women’s Association and best of all she is a keen Balmain Tigers supporter. We reckon son Tony will make the trek from Mexico City to be present. Happy daze all.

DICK HUGHES of Ryde and lately Dorothy Henderson Lodge Macquarie Park has passed away at 83. Dick was a veteran of The Indonesian Confrontation and Malaysian Emergency 1960 – 1966 and lifetime member of North Ryde RSL Sub Branch.
He was a former jazz announcer on 2RRR and lifetime member of the Sydney Blues Society. His funeral service is Friday August 17 at Magnolia Chapel Macquarie Park Crematorium. Rest in Peace Dick.

EDWARD MICELI heads This Week’s Birthday Honours List, celebrating 102 years today Wednesday August 15, 2018.
Edward was born in Leni on the Island of Salina off the northern coast of Sicily in 1916 and came to Australia in 1950 where he met his future wife Stella Speziale.
Their first daughter Stella was born in 1951 and second daughter Lorraine
June in 1952. Edward and Stella ran a mixed fruit business in Surry Hills for 15 years before moving to Eastwood in 1968 where Edward was appointed caretaker of Eastwood Public School.
Happy birthday Edward.
