Owen Bennett awarded RSL Life Membership

Ninety two year old Owen Bennett of West Ryde was awarded Life Membership of the Returned and Services League (RSL) at Gladesville RSL Club last Friday.

His Life Membership was presented by Bennelong MP John Alexander after a speech of recognition by Ryde Dictrict RSL Sub Branch President Bernie Cox who paid tribute to Mr Bennett’s long service to his country.
“After being stationed as a young soldier at Addison Road, Marrickville in 1936, Owen Bennett served his country in Darwin and Papua New Guinea until 1946,” Mr Cox said.
“He has also served as a Welfare Officer for the RSL and provided outstanding service to veterans and in aged care.
“Mr Bennett is Senior Vice President of the Ryde District RSL and has served as an RSL Youth Club Vice President, a Trustee and as an active member of his local RSL Sub Branch.”
Mr Alexander said it was a pleasure to present the Life Membership and to regard Mr Bennett as a friend and as an inspira-
tion to others. Owen Bennett said he
was honoured to be rec- ognised.
“I’ve never thought about being honoured in this way,” he said.
“I had a job to do and I did it.”
He received a standing ovation and recognition from Gladesville RSL Club Secretary    Bryan Caruthers.
