BEECROFT area’s largest independent charity garage sale raised more than $11,000 this year.

The annual WISEKidsWORLD Mega Garage Sale organised by friends Sue Day and Bindi Shah of Cheltenham and local volunteers was a huge success on many levels.

The team want to say a big thank you to everyone who donated their goods throughout the year and especially to the many satisfied bargain hunters who came along over the weekend of April 21-22.

The small team of dedicated volunteers transformed hundreds of toys, books and household items into desperately needed learning resources for schools in developing nations.

The funds will go to four charities helping schools in East Timor, Uganda and India as well as to charity Room-to-Read for libraries in developing nations.

The WISEKidsWORLD garage sale, now in its 13th year filled both the Beecroft Scout Hall and the adjoining Guide Hall.

“Thank you to everyone who purchased items, to all the people who donated items and especially to the small but amazing team of volunteers who made it all possible,” said organiser Sue.

“It’s a lot of work to organise -we collect for the whole year.

But it’s worth it seeing people’s clutter turn into opportunities for poor kids to learn. It’s a very practical, simple way of working together to transform lives.”

Bindi said part of the incentive for many of the volunteers was also giving their children an opportunity to help others.

“From set up to pack up, the atmosphere is very special as we work together to help kids from all around the world. We also get to meet lots of people from all around who now come every year for the bargains,” Bindi said.

All funds will be donated to literacy charity Room-to-Read and other charities which support poor schools: a school in the slums of Delhi, India (via Guru Nanak Garib Niwaj Educational Society School), 100% Hope village school in Uganda, and to pay for teacher training in East Timor (Mary MacKillop Foundation).

More helpers are always very welcome.
