Probus focus on Governor Bligh

GLADESVILLE Probus has an exciting program of activities coming up and welcomes visitors.

On Thursday July 6 in their new meeting venue at Sporties Club in Ryde Road from 10am, Gillian Lewis from the Australian National Maritime Museum will talk about the life of William Bligh, our fourth Governor.

There’s more to Bligh than conflict, mutiny and rebellion.

This courageous but maligned master mariner was a loving husband and father who cared for the welfare of his men and the indigenous people he encountered.

He sailed with Cook, Nelson and Flinders and was a protege of Joseph Banks.

Was a man with that CV really hiding under the bed when the marines came knocking?

Gillian is a very popular guest speaker and usually comes laden with special offers from the Museum, a great place to visit anytime especially with children.

The club has two coach trips planned for August and September and if they can the fill the coaches they’ll subsidise the cost to members and guests through a Ryde Council grant.

On August 17, Probus will visit the Kurrajong Radio Museum for morning tea, a guided tour and doses of radio nostalgia.

Lunch at Club Richmond and visit the Lindt chocolate factory on the way home. All inclusive less than $55.

The second trip is a Barbecue Day on September 20 at Mt Annan Botanic Gardens and opportunity to tour the Plant Bank facility with scientific staff.

Plant Bank is a purpose built storage and quarantine facility which maintains stocks of native plants. Endangered species and those which may have future crop potential are nurtured.

The 30 year old gardens now attract 400,000 visitors a year and are well worth a visit. Coach and lunch is $56 plus $16 for the optional Plant Bank tour. Contact Joan Booth 9868 2940 or Terry Harkins 8812 5920 for more information and bookings.
