Ryde Mayor stunned by protest censorship

Ryde Mayor Jerome Laxale has been stunned by Baird Government censorship which limits ‘unfit’ councils response to last week’s announcement to merge Ryde, Hunters Hill and Lane Cove into a mega Northern Sydney council.

A feedback form sent to the three local councils imposes a 50 word maximum limit on comments as well as a tiny box where councils can select three preferred merger partners.

Mayor Laxale said the censorship shows the government is not serious about meaningful consultation.

“Baird promised consultation but what we have in reality is a farce,” he told the media yesterday.

“How can we limit our comments to 50 words ?

“That’s not even enough to live tweet The Bachelor!”

Woollahra Mayor Toni Zelyzer last week wrote a letter to The Weekly Times where she denounced the government’s action.

“Clearly the community has not been heard,” she said.
