Star Wars smashes local box office records at Event Cinemas

The latest Star Wars movie is smashing box office records at Event Cinemas in Top Ryde and Macquarie Park.

Titled ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ the smash hit has seen 1,200 tickets sold within a minute of them going on sale last Tuesday night.

More than 10,000 tickets were sold in the first ten minutes with a further 30,000 tickets sold shortly afterwards.

The movie is due to be released at 12 noon on Thursday December 17 and has eclipsed sales of previous films including the cult movie ‘Harry Potter and The Deathly Hollows’ which sold 7,258 tickets when it was released.

Event Cinemas General Manager Chris Burke said staff had under-estimated the huge number of Star Wars devotees anxious to book tickets.

“While we anticipated that fans would react strongly to tickets going on sale, we could not predict the phenomenal numbers that we are experiencing,” he said.

“Sessions are continuing to sell fast and the galaxy is the limit for the records we are going to see broken by this film.

“Our cinema at Top Ryde still has sessions available in the incredibly immersive Vmax Cinema, which boasts the largest screen in the local area at over 25 meters wide, while our Event Cinema Macquarie offers sessions in the luxurious Gold Class cinemas, where every seat is the best seat in the house.

“To meet the unprecedented demand, Event Cinemas will continue to open more and more sessions.”

Directed by J.j.Abrams, ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens continues the Star Wars trilogy created by George Lucas and brings back favourites that include Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Hans Solo and Chewbacca as well as many new characters.
