Ruth Our First 2015 Entry
YA RUTH HUO, 22, or Marsfield is the first entry in this year’s TWT Miss Eastwood Granny Smith Festival Queen Quest.
Ruth is the Founder and Volunteer Photographer for US Photography which is a charity organisation that donates all its funds to provide complimentary photography for charity events and families with a loved one with a terminal illness.
She supports medical research into cancer with Professor David Morris and Professor Winston Liauw at St George Public Hospital.
Ruth’s hobbies and interests include marathon running and yoga.
Ruth says Why I would like to be TWT Granny Smith Festival Queen: I would like to be the Granny Smith Festival Queen to inspire other young people to take an interest and potentially pursue a career in Medical Research and Medicine.
I’m currently a 4 th year medical student at the University of New South Wales, undertaking my Honours Research year in the field of cancer research with Professor David Morris and Professor Winston Liauw.
We’re looking at innovative and minimally invasive cancer treatments to improve the overall survival and wellbeing of the patients not only in Sydney, but across the world through publications in international medical research journals that doctors all across the world read.
Another reason why I would like to the Granny Smith Festival Queen is to encourage others to use their skills and talents, something that brings enjoyment whether that be cooking, dancing or painting, and that passion can be channelled into doing something good for society.
When I was young, I always wanted to, but struggled in fundraising for charity because I was never really good at those 40 hour famines or selling chocolate boxes, but I found out as I got older that I really enjoyed and excelled at photography.
So in 2012 I founded Us Photography, a charity that provides photography for events whereby all the profits go to charity.
Currently we have four photographers who give up their time and their photography skills.
We also support other charities by providing complimentary photography at their events, and have been blessed to have been the official photographer for Hepatitis B Free at their 2015 Fundraiser Ball at Curzon Hall, Save the Orphans and the local Police Citizens Youth Club in Eastwood.
